Vera Facey
Vera Facey was a botanist in the Department of Biology at UND from 1947-1979. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, she received her Ph.D. from the University of Toronto in 1946. Her dissertation won the Wintercorbyn Prize as she was cited for her "research in botany of most use in agriculture and medicine". With a botanist's eye, Vera Facey diligently covered the prairies of eastern Grand Forks County throughout the growing season. She and her coworkers catalogued more than 250 vascular plant species. This early work on the plants of Grand Forks prairies will be invaluable to future scholars as they assess the changes in plant life over time.
