Holton Shaw
Holton Shaw arrived in Grand Forks in the year 1886, when steamships still plied the muddy waters of the Red River and before the Dakota Territory was to become North Dakota and South Dakota. He worked at the post office in Grand Forks, and later became the county treasurer. He even founded his own business, the H.A. Shaw Bill Posting Company. But Holton was also a naturalist who was intimately familiar with the prairies of the Red River Valley. Living as he did in the diverse tallgrass prairie, he was considered an authority on birds and bird eggs. He lived in an era when the collection of wild eggs was considered an acceptable activity, and his egg collection is said to have included more distinct varieties than any other in the United States. Holton was an active early member of the Audubon Society in North Dakota.
