Ferruginous Hawk 24 inches
The ferruginous hawk is the largest buteo in North America, and it is an
uncommon sight in the Red River Valley. Yet it’s believed that the continent’s
easternmost nesting pair is found in Grand Forks County’s prairie grasslands.
Listen for its call, a loud descending kree-e-ah — and watch for its 56-inch
wingspan soaring across the prairie.
